Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world and is extreme. It has avalanches, crevices, thin air and is very difficult to climb. Its height is 29,035 feet. Mount Everest rises about five and a half miles above sea level. Mount Everest is part of the Himalayas, where there are a total of eight huge mountains. The Himalayas are considered the great Asian mountain system and are 1,500 miles long. Mount Everest is located in Nepal which is located between China and India. The Tibetans named Mount Everest Chomolungma (goddess mother of the world). There are many stories about the people who climbed Mount Everest. Nawang Gombu was the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Junko Label from Japan was the first woman to reach the top of Mount Everest. Dougal Haston and Doug Scott became the first climbers to reach the top by climbing up the southwest face of the mountain. Oxygen is so thin, the winds so powerful, the mountain is so steep, and the temperatures are so extremely cold, that no plants or animals can be found at the top of Mount Everest. There are seven glaciers on Mount Everest. The first ten attempts to climb the mountain failed until 1953. The mountain was named after Sir George Everest in the 1800’s. Some people died while they were climbing Mount Everest because they were not being aware of their oxygen tanks. They would run out of air and die because it is hard to breathe in the thin air.
